Many of you have asked me about AI, especially if I have noticed its impact on this industry. Will it take our jobs? Will we be able to distinguish what is real and what is not? What about the ethics surrounding it? I personally feel very optimistic… at least when it comes to any branch of art or visual design.

Over the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has exploded into many industries, and graphic design has been no exception. From automating tasks to creating personalised content, AI is transforming the way designers work.

One of the most impressive developments is due to generative AI, which has opened up new possibilities for graphic designers. It also raises interesting questions about the relationship between human creativity and machines.

What is generative AI and how is it applied in graphic design?

Generative AI is a branch of artificial intelligence that focuses on creating visual content using algorithms. Unlike other types of artificial intelligence that perform specific tasks, generative AI has the ability to learn patterns and generate new content based on those patterns. In the field of graphic design, this technology can create images, illustrations, logos, patterns and even animations based on previous data and prompts.

The antagonistic generative networks, or GANs, are one of the most common methods used by this type of AI. These networks can generate images that appear to have been created by humans, based on large amounts of data that the AI analyses to learn structures and styles.

Benefits of generative AI for graphic designers.

1.- Rapid visual prototyping

One of the main benefits of generative AI for graphic designers is its ability to create visual prototypes quickly and efficiently. Through different online platforms, designers can generate images from textual descriptions or by providing images to facilitate the understanding of the idea. This significantly speeds up the creative brainstorming process. In addition, for each description you send, the AI offers several proposals as a basis for your final creation.

For example, a designer could describe a specific scene as “a floating boat being fished by a child in a desert landscape with a starry sky” and the AI will generate several versions of that idea in seconds. This allows designers to explore different approaches in a very short time.

2.- Creating complex patterns

Complex pattern creationGenerative AI has the ability to create highly detailed complex patterns. Using AI algorithms, designers can generate unique and repetitive patterns for our textiles, illustrations, packaging and branding in general. This not only saves us a lot of time, but allows us to discover shapes and patterns in a simple way that we might not have considered.

3.- Visual style and variations

Generative AI also allows designers to experiment with a huge range of visual styles. By training an AI network with works by specific artists, illustrators or trends, designers can generate variations of styles in a very agile way (and I’m not talking about the Ghibli, Simpsons, Disney, Pixar and so on that have become so fashionable). This possibility pushes the boundaries of creativity, giving way to designs that merge traditional techniques with contemporary approaches, for example.

4.- Workflow optimisation and efficiency

Repetitive tasks that normally take hours of manual work, such as creating colour variants, layout adjustments or iterations of a design, can be performed automatically and accurately thanks to AI. This not only improves efficiency, but also allows designers to focus more on creative decision-making, rather than repetitive technical tasks.

5.- Exploring new creative frontiers

Because AI generates visual proposals that can be innovative and even unpredictable, our concept of creativity increases. That is, designers can use AI as an inspirational tool, challenging their own approach and offering alternative solutions that had not been contemplated before. This new “point of view” allows designers to explore new visual concepts.

Considerations of the use of AI in graphic design.

Despite the benefits of generative AI in graphic design, it also raises important questions about creativity and the role of the machine in the creative process, presenting us with some challenges that we should consider:

  • Authenticity of design: The fact that AI can autonomously generate content raises a debate about authorship and copyright. Is the creator of the AI the true author of the work, or is it the designer who has guided the process? These ethical dilemmas about the authenticity and autonomy of design are increasingly relevant with the use of AI in this industry.
  • Technological dependence: AI is a very suggestive avenue that could lead designers to focus too much on the automatic proposals generated by AI, limiting their own creativity.
That is why AI should be seen as a complementary tool and not as a substitute for human thinking. And I mean this on a general level. ChatGPT is a good tool to generate a structure or base to then, as humans, go deeper into it, develop it and take it to where we want to take it.
  • Ethical and aesthetic concerns: While generative AI is capable of creating visually appealing designs, the work it does lacks the emotions and cultural context that a human designer can bring to it. In addition, many designers are struggling with the debate over the use of algorithms that replicate pre-existing styles, leading to a uniformity or lack of originality in AI-generated designs.

Differences and strengths of the main generative AIs

With this list, I intend to highlight the potentials of the different image-generative artificial intelligences. But I insist, AIs that can enhance the creativity and speed of work of the graphic designer, not replace it.

The most commonly used are the following:

  • ChatGPT: Although this artificial intelligence is mainly text-based, it now also generates images with DALL-E / GPT-4o, making it a multimodal AI.
  • Midjourney: It is an artificial intelligence for the generation of artistic images, of which its range of styles, hyper-realistic illustrations and conceptual renders are noteworthy. High visual quality.
It works very well for digital art, conceptual design, covers, portfolios, etc.
Does not allow direct image editing, only variations and upscales.
  • Adobe Firefly: This is a generative AI for image and visual editing with full integration with Adobe tools such as Illustrator or Photoshop for your final work. It is licensed for commercial use as the images with which it has been trained are royalty free.
It has a professional graphic style compatible with commercial standards and is clearly focused on professional design users. It offers an interface oriented to editing, not only to creation.
  • Freepik AI: This AI offers image generation, graphics, templates and graphic resources for social networks, among others.
It is more oriented to visual marketing, giving more value to its ease of use and quick generation of content than to creative depth. Ideal for non-designers or small companies.

The future of graphic design with generative AI

Generative AI in graphic design is here to stay and is constantly evolving. In the future, designers will most likely use this tool to further optimise workflows, explore new forms of artistic expression and create more personalised visual experiences.

However, it is important to remember that AI is only a tool, not a substitute for human creativity. AI doesn’t know what ‘goodbye’ means, but if you tell it, it will say goodbye back. This is because of the billions of conversations the AI reads. The most common response when you say goodbye to someone in a conversation is for the other person to say the same thing. In other words, AI models are very powerful for tasks that can and should be automated. But don’t expect them to be creative. For now, only we humans can be. We must not forget that those who bring closeness, empathy, nostalgia or some kind of feeling, are in this case graphic designers. That is why we must continue to maintain our creative and strategic role in the whole process, using, why not, AI as an ally.

There are already designs of various kinds out there that lack the personal touch or creativity to appeal to a particular audience. Now imagine designs created entirely by AI. They can be even more boring and monotonous… It is true that every month new AI models appear that promise to make our lives easier by offering us comfort and automation… But this is the key. The results often end up looking the same. The templates, layouts, images and visuals they produce can become very repetitive, and don’t really capture the personal qualities that make a message unique.

I am sure these tools will evolve and learn over the years, but they can never replace the creative human brain. As individuals, we have a deep understanding of the needs of our audience, the message we want to convey and the emotional connection we want to make. These are qualities that cannot be replaced by algorithms.

In my point of view, AI should be understood as a tool that helps us to optimise the workflow more efficiently and save valuable time in the process. In this way, we get to focus and invest our efforts in creating a truly impactful and captivating experience for our audience. The combination of human talent and generative AI capability promises to take graphic design to a more flexible, dynamic and exciting level.

Conclusion.

Generative AI has burst into graphic design, offering new tools and opportunities for creating images, patterns or logos. This technology allows designers to create unique content and explore new creative forms faster and more efficiently..

Despite its undeniable advantages, it also presents us with challenges of authorship, creativity and technology. It seems, then, that the future of graphic design lies in the dynamic collaboration between human intelligence and artificial intelligence, where both can coexist to enrich and transform the world of graphic design.
